Heiner finished with his velomobil in Bregenz

Heiner completed his journey on July 10th, 2024, at 17:22, after 21 days and 17 hours, becoming our first-ever velomobile finisher. He initially registered to finish in Tarifa but had to change his plan before the start at NorthCape, opting to finish in Bregenz instead. Heiner thoroughly enjoyed the route.

The original NCT route includes some cycling paths protected by poles to prevent car access. To accommodate the velomobile, we made some adjustments to the route, which worked well for Heiner.

Heiner plans to return in 2026 to complete the route from Bregenz to Tarifa.

Juhani Saario finished last night 12th of July 2024 00:24 in Tarifa. For the 7400km route to Tarifa he needed 22 days and 24 minutes. Juhani was welcomed by the first finisher Christian Englert with a beer.

Peter Grätzer from Switzerland finished in Bregenz 5th of July. For the 4070km route to Bregenz he needed 15 days, 12 hours and 48 minutes. Congratulation Peter, well done!

The last 3700km Peter dealt with crank issues, but nothing could stop him to finish his ride as planned in Bregenz.

Tommi Kurola – the trail runner

Tommi Kurola the second rider from Finland arrived at the checkpoint in Nice yesterday 05.07.2024 12:25 CET. Tommi is from Espoo Helsinki, 53 years old and originally a runner. He is doing long distance trail runs.

For the NorthCape-Tarifa Tommi was training all the mountain passes virtually on the computer. In Val d’Isere he said: “This mountain passes are in reality much steeper as on the computer simulation.” Anyway he was climbing up Col d’Iseran like a mountain goat.

Juhani Saario arrived at the checkpoint in Nice at 04.07.2024 21:36 CET and is currently 4 hours 22 minutes behind the record ride of Steffen Streich in 2018. Did he study Steffen’s 2018 ride? Juhani is from Oulu, Finland, and is 27 years old.

Finnish riders are consistently at the front of this ultra-long-distance bikepacking race. In 2022, Matti Ainasoja finished 1st after a terrible crash with a fox on the downhill of Col de Cayolle, and in 2018, Samuli Mäkinen finished 3rd in Tarifa.

Steffen Streich

In 2018, Steffen Streich won the race in an impressive 21 days and 57 minutes, a record that still stands unbeaten. This year, he set a new record for reaching checkpoint 1 in Helsinki and continued to push ahead, reaching Tallinn nearly a day faster than his 2018 time. However, since leaving Tallinn, Steffen has faced several challenges and lost his lead.
